PayPal is basically like an on-line banking system that users may integrate into their web site.

When a customer places an order they are passed to the PayPal Secure Server where they will enter their credit card details. These payments are then transferred to the website owners bank account or used to purchase from other websites using the PayPay system.

PayPal will notify the customer and the website owner of any transactions via email.
